Happy New Year!

Ring Out, Wild Bells

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind,

For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in navyress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

/Lord Tennyson/

Halloween Nursery Ryhmes

It is the night of Halloween
When all the witches may be seen
Some are fat
Some are lean
And some are as tall as a castor
bean.

The witches don their pointed hats,
The witches croak and croon,
The witches ride their broomsticks,
Away beyond the moon.
The witches don their flowing cloaks,
The witches stir their brew.
The witches chant their magic spells,
All the dark hours through.
The witches stroke their big black cats,
They comb their locks of gray,
Yet when the first faint daylight comes.
The witches hide away.

I'm a mean old witch with a hat.
I ride on my broom with my cat.
My shoes are pointed and my chin is too.
You had better watch out or I might scare you...

Peaceful serenity

Would you like to live in a home home like this?

My daughter-in-law sent me these pictures from visiting my granddaughter in Clevelend and they were entertaining themselves in Amish Country. Here are some pictures of their Amish-built cabin; complete with wi-fi, flatscreen TV, modern kitchen and jacuzzi tub. Her favorite spot was the deck, where she sat on a handmade rockingchair listening to the rooster crowing and the clopping of the horse-drown carriage.

Next Blue Moon coming up August 20-21, 2013

Blue Moon can be second of two full moons of a calendar month. Or Blue Moon can be third of four full moons in a season. Upcoming Blue Moon is the seasonal kind.

Yes, it will be a Blue Moon that lights up the night sky on August 20-21 from dusk till down! But it won't be as Blue Moon by the most popular term - the second of two full moons to occur in the same calendar month. Nor is the moon likely to be blue in color, as that's caused by exceedingly rare atmospheric conditions.

Rather, the August 2013 full moon will present the third of four full moons to fall in the same season. A season is defined as the period of time in between a solstice and an equinox - or vice versa. This full moon is the third of four full moons to take place in between the June 2013 solstice and the September 2013 equinox. That makes the August 2013 full moon a Blue Moon!

The moon turns full on August 21, at 1:45 Universal Time.  Although the full moon happens at the same  moment worldwide, the clock reads differently by time zone. The moon turns full in the United States on Tuesday, August 20, at 9:45 p.m. EDT, 8:45 p.m. CDT, 7:45 p.m. MDT or 6:45 p.m. PDT. Astronomically speaking, the moon is full when it's most directly opposite the sun for the month.

Boszorkányhab (Witches' Froth)

In the heat of the summer we don't want to spend too much time with cooking and baking.  Please try my quick and easy recipe out, I know you'll love this very light dessert.

For the best result fresh berries or pureed baked apples should be used, but frozen or canned fruits or even two tablespoons of fruit jam will be perfectly suitable also.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb ripe raspberries
  • 2 egg whites
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces of Cool Whip, or whipped cream
Wash and drain the raspberries and dump them into a deep mixing bowl. Add the egg whites and sugar; beat with an electric mixer for 10-15 minutes, or until fluffy and rather thick. Spoon into serving glasses and keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Decorate the froth with the Cool Whip.

Kate and William's Royal Baby

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's son was born at 4.24pm, Monday, July 22.

Prince William had said the couple "could not be happier" following the birth of the 8lb 6oz boy.

Gun salutes in Green Park and the Tower of London and the ringing of bells at Westminster Abbey have marked the birth of the third in line to the throne.
The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired a 41-gun salute in Green Park at 14:00 BST, after riding past Buckingham Palace.
At the same time, the Honourable Artillery Company - the City of London's army reserve regiment - fired a 62-gun salute from Gun Wharf at the Tower of London.

Visitors to Niagara Falls discovered the baby's gender in spectacular fashion as the rapids turned blue.

God bless the Royal Family!

Spring is here....

Finally!  After the cold and rainy months now everything is blooming in my garden. It is such a beautiful uplifting sight but I still have tears in my eyes at the Memorial for the victims of the recent Boston Marathon.

Sir Colin Davis

Conductor Sir Colin Davis has died at the age of 85, the London Symphony Orchestra has announced.

Surrey-born Sir Colin made his debut with the orchestra in 1959 and was its longest serving principal conductor.
He worked with the Royal Opera House, the BBC Symphony and English Chamber orchestras and was internationally renowned for his interpretations of Mozart, Sibelius and Berlioz.

Roger Wright - controller BBC Radio 3 and director of BBC Proms - said Sir Colin's "death is an enormous loss to music".

"His last performance at the BBC Proms two years ago, a towering interpretation of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, was a reminder of the special qualities of his conducting and his big-hearted and deep musicianship," he added.

A place in the Sun

My contribution this year to Valentine Day's celebration is a romantic scene of  Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift from this tragic 1951 movie.

Carnival In Hungary

In Hungary, Carnival is known as Farsang. Hungarians celebrate this pre-Lenten festival with food, like pork and sauerkraut, and doughnuts, as well as with parties and costumes.

Farsang in Budapest is marked by the hosting of many formal balls, some which can be costly to attend. In addition, concerts and performances will also be held during Farsang, from January 6 to Ash Wednesday. Be sure to look for the tasty Carnival doughnuts called fank or farsangi fank that are essential during this time.

Szallagos Fánk (Ribboned Doughnuts)

The fánk is one of the most liked yeast cakes of the Hungarians, specially among the young. It is very traditional to make them just before Lent, during the time of the dances and festivals. For the complete recipe please look up my Hungarian Recipe site (link posted on the left).
